You become what you think about—carefully plan your mental munching

2025-11-08 by bible805

junk food, not good for body or souls
Eating foods like these won’t nourish our bodies, and we need to take equal care to not feed our souls junk.

We all know that if we eat a constant diet of junk food, candy, and honestly delicious fast food, we probably won’t have a healthy body. We’ve got to eat a healthy diet and exercise if we want to all we can be to do all God wants us to do. And even more importantly to experience joy and peace in our lives that’s hard to do if we’re abusing our bodies.

The challenge is that to eat the right things isn’t nearly as easy as reaching for those little packets of cookies and chips and swinging through the drive-through. It takes work and planning for a consistently healthy diet and workout plan.

It’s no different with our souls—

What we take in mentally and how we exercise it by putting what we learn into consistent practice makes a huge difference in our mental and spiritual health. [Read more…]

Teaching tip: Be careful of personal illustrations—keep the focus on Jesus and the Word

2025-08-06 by bible805

Child and Bible
Your family may be a wonderful source of illustrations, but the best source is the Bible itself.

Popular advice on preaching and teaching advises that the teacher scatter into their lesson illustrations from their lives to make their message more relatable.

Doing that may have some value, but it also has some pitfalls that may lessen the impact of your message or lesson. Following are three reasons why this might be the case and some advice on what to use instead of personal illustrations. [Read more…]

“Pastors are tired” – a help for that and yet, what do you expect?

2025-07-12 by bible805

Dog-tired in ministry
Are you tired in ministry? Here is a resource that will help.

“Pastors are tired” has been a recent headline in several ministry communications. When I read it, I had two conflicting thoughts that I’ll share. Be warned, the first is a bit grumpy, but it is followed by what I hope is a compassionate and helpful resource (stick around for that, it’s worth it). [Read more…]

The antidote to becoming monstrous—God’s Word, plus challenges from the movie, Zone of Interest

2024-07-03 by bible805

Read the Bible in Chronological Order
The most important thing to build into your life is God’s Word. Here are resources to help you do that.

Intro note: The content here may seem an overly intense way to encourage you to read through the Bible in Chronological Order, which Bible805 (https://wp.me/pazrJD-OO) has a variety of ways for you to do but we are living in a time when truth seems to have lost its connection with objective reality in the minds of many and a simple encouragement to read through your Bible didn’t seem like enough.

Times are tragic when now truth for many is defined by whatever social media we follow or whatever we tell ourselves is true.

Jesus succinctly summed up our situation when he said, “You are in error, because you don’t know the Scriptures.” Truth, goodness, and beauty, the truly good life, and salvation are all found in the Scriptures, in God’s Word. Truth is not humanly generated and when we forget that, when we listen to an authority other than God’s Word to guide our lives, life does not go well. The following example, inspired by the movie, Zone of Interest, though extreme, I pray will be instructive and motivating for you to consider. A PODCAST and VIDEO follow, then the text of them, and recommended resource links are at the end of this article.

The challenging faith of Alexi Navalny, who “did as required by the instructions and did not betray the commandment”

2024-07-01 by bible805

Alexei Navalny marching in 2017 Watching the final events of Alexi Navalny’s life, I couldn’t help but wonder why he did what he did and how he had such obvious peace and courage as he did it.

Russel Moore quoted him in a recent article and in it, Moore emphasized Navalny’s courage to stand alone.

Though admirable, I found another aspect of the quote, which I’ll discuss following it more challenging to me and to all who read and take to heart the values emphasized here on Bible805, which are to know, trust, apply, and teach the Bible.

Following is the quote and my comments. [Read more…]

How to Support Bible805, an update as of 12-9-2025

2024-05-02 by bible805

Support Bible805Thousands of people all over the world have downloaded and used the materials provided by Bible805 and I am amazed and praise God for the outreach it has. For all the years of doing this, I’ve never taken advertising or participated in any affiliate marketing links or schemes and with the exception of books that are sold on Amazon, all materials I create are free.

I felt strongly almost two years ago that the Lord wanted me to make everything free, including all the resources on the Bible805 Academy and Bible805 images and I did that. Though I never charged much before, I did for a few things and also tried PWYW (pay what you want) but finally felt the Lord wanted it all free to people who might benefit from the resources but who did not have the money to buy Bible teaching materials.

It has been gratifying to see the response of the many downloads from all over the world I believe in large measure because they are free, however, they are not free to create. Software and hardware costs as well as greatly increasing hosting and services costs. [Read more…]

Clean Monday, a challenge to recommit to Lent and a focus on becoming like Jesus

2024-03-18 by bible805

Clean Monday is a time to recommit to Lenten practices“Clean Monday” is an intriguing label isn’t it?

I thought so when it came across my internet feeds. I like the idea of starting the week, clean and right before God and people. That’s a useful thought anytime but I was ignorant that today is Clean Monday, the first day of Great Lent, as Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox refer to the Lenten season. For those of you who have been observing Lent in various ways in the Western church, you are a little over halfway through your Lenten observation this year–following is some encouragement to get you through it. Paul’s Prison Letters, Pity party or extraordinary focused witness? Lesson on Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon

2024-01-09 by bible805

Paul’s Prison LettersPity party or extraordinary focused witness? How do we act when bad things happen to us?

We always have a choice—we can retaliate; we can throw a pity party; we can blame others. Or we can trust God no matter what and try to respond in a way He wants us to.

In what are called the “Prison Epistles,” Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, we’ll look at how the Apostle Paul responded in a very difficult situation. This lesson about them is much more than a history lesson about Paul because what we do, how we respond to challenging situations is the clearest evidence possible of what we truly believe and WHO we truly believe in. The book of Romans, saved by grace alone; challenged to walk worthy

2023-12-24 by bible805

Romans is one of the most significant books in the Bible because it is a complete and systematic explanation of the Christian faith.

It is different than the other letters of the New Testament that were written to address specific problems in specific churches.

The focus in this book was to clarify the Christian faith and our salvation—to show from start to finish that it is by grace alone through faith alone, not adherence to Jewish laws, or human effort, that salvation is possible.

At the same time, it also clarifies God’s continuing expectations for those who have accepted His gift of salvation and challenges them to walk worthy. [Read more…]
