The Bible, Novel or Short Story Collection, part one—and why it matters tremendously, now and forever

You’ve probably not considered the question of whether the Bible is like a collection of short stories or a novel—it’s most likely not something you stay up at night thinking about, but, how you answer it is foundational to your understanding of the Bible, AND more importantly, in many ways how you respond to it.

If on the one hand, we believe the Bible is the creation of human authors, like a collection of short stories, though we feel it might have some inspiring and morally valid advice, it is our choice as a fellow human reader to pick and choose what we follow.

If on the other hand, we truly believe the Bible is ONE Story, with the structure of a Novel instead of a collection of short stories, written by God Himself, our Creator and the One to whom we will one day give account—our obedience and understanding of it isn’t optional.

This lesson will help you begin to understand the importance of looking at the Bible as a Novel and the lesson next week will continue the topic. One of the most fascinating parts of the lesson is where I go over the classic structure of a novel and show you how the Christian Bible overall is a perfect example of it—do check out the lesson  in whatever format below works for you—your view of the Bible won’t ever be the same.

Who is Jesus Really? Answers from history, other religions, the Bible

The most important question anyone on earth needs to answer is, “Who is Jesus?”

This lesson examines that question by comparing the historical record, the teachings of other religions, and the testimony of the Bible. It emphasizes that Jesus is one of the best-attested figures of the ancient world, reviews historical sources inside and outside the Bible, contrasts Christianity’s understanding of Jesus with other worldviews, and challenges each person to decide who Jesus is and to live consistently with that answer.

The lesson is useful not only for giving you a solid foundation for sharing what you believe about Jesus, but also for those dark nights of the soul, when you have doubts. Our faith is solid and sure and this lesson will not only enlighten you, but I trust be of comfort to you.

The promise of Life After Death—discover the assurance of it throughout the Old Testament

The Apostle Paul said that “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. (1 Cor.15:19)”

The belief in a life after death, a full, bodily resurrection to eternal LIFE and not simply some shadowy existence wandering as a disembodied spirit—that is a foundational promise of the Christian life.

Though most would agree with that statement, a true biblical understanding of life after death is a bit fuzzy to some believers. After encountering the idea that life after death wasn’t clear to people who trusted God in the Old Testament in both some Christian writing and then from some people I respected in other areas of their teaching, I was quite upset, because I believe that uncertainty can cause great pain to many.

I was upset also because, though I do believe in Progressive Revelation, where God reveals His truths more and more fully over time, I also believe that for the core issues, God has been very clear and the clear teaching of life after death, of full bodily resurrection is certainly core to Bible teaching. To resolve the conflict in my mind and heart, I did as I always do, a deep dive into what the Bible actually says about it and this lesson is the result. [Read more…]

Think the Trinity isn’t mentioned in the Old Testament? Spoiler alert—it is—2,600 times

Hard to believe isn’t it?

But that is not an idle claim—though for you to understand why it’s true, you need to watch, read, or listen to Part 3 of the Bible805 series on Understanding the Trinity, the Trinity throughout the Bible.

In addition to supporting this claim, the lesson also goes into the roles of various members of the Trinity in both the Old and New Testaments. What many have found especially interesting in this are the comments by John Walvoord and Warren Wiersbe on the pre-incarnate (before He became the human Jesus) appearances of the God the Son in the Old Testament.

The Trinity ISN’T Hard to Understand! It really isn’t when you look at what the Bible says about it

Many people believe that the idea of the Trinity is one of the most difficult to understand in the Christian faith.

I very much disagree! God does not intentionally confuse us as to who he is. He desires an intimate, interactive relationship with us.

He created us in his image so he could communicate with us. He walked with his new creation in the Garden of Eden.

When humanity intentionally broke the intimate relationship that they had, God immediately set in place a plan to bring people back into fellowship with Himself. That plan culminated in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus that once again made possible an intimate relationship with God.

With that foundational reality, why do we have the problems in understanding who our God is? The challenge to understand the Trinity is the same challenge of understanding everything else about our faith.

We need to look at what God’s Word says about it, which I’ll help you do and so you won’t simply accept statements about the Trinity that go along the lines of something like this. “Oh, it’s just a mystery we can’t understand.”

Many hear that and quit there. But we won’t. We will look at God’s Word and the passages that specifically deal with the Trinity. [Read more…]
